                                                 THE 'SENTE' RULE OF NINPO TAIJUTSU                                                        -The Ninpo 'Nin' (martial art of ninja) 'Po' (spiritual guide)  tradition inclunds the Ninja's-Kunoichi's (female Ninja) unique Taijutsu (body arts), and fihtinng arts, also known as Ninpo Taijutsu, Koppo-jutsu or Kosshi-jutsu. Kunoichi do the same training and additionally to specific techniques dedicated only to women. These arts were designed not only for survival but also for eneryday life. Taijutsu was also essential for Ninja to perform their remarkable techniques, using assorted Ninja weapons and tools. For each mission the Ninja were used different equimpent and Kunoichi had the possibility to use personal belongings as weapons (like umbrella, fan etc). Taijutsu body arts are strong and pliant: they can respond to any kind of change and can be applied to any situation. One feauture which is important to the training of Ninpo Taijutsu for Ninja and Kunoichi is that "SENTE"! The rule of "SENTE"  is not allowed to attack without a serious reason: in other words, you never strike the first blow. Also Ninja and Kunoichi who had trained fully in Taijutsu would only need to shed another person's blood in exceptional circumstances. The principals also of martial arts, Budo, don't allow to a Budoga (martial artist) who is violent and aggressive to continue the training of martial arts. The profile of "SENTE" for a Budoga, Ninja, Kunoichi who is in the path of the martial arts, is to not exhibit his ego regarding his knowledge about martial arts. That is prohibited for a Ninja or Kunoichi! Secondly, a Budoga Ninja Kunoichi must be a kind and virtuous person and ready to help and protect the weak people without second thought. Finally, must try to improve every day, the Ninpo-Ninjutsu arts and the personal way of living. On the contrary should never be lazy, give up the objectives and the dreams of lifetime and should avoid to use the martial arts for evil purposes!... Who were the Ninjas?

Ninjas (忍者) refer to the group of professional spies who flourished in the pre modern age in Japan. What kind of activities did ninjas perform? Firstly, as ninjas are spies, ninjas entered into enemy territories in secret and they ran away with top secrets of their enemies. There were various ways they went about their activities. Primarily, the methods centred about not being seen by anyone. For instance, a ninja would creep into a residence where lords of his enemies lived and eavesdropped on confidential conversations of important people. In this case, of course his targets paid close attention not to leak important information. They tried to keep when and where meetings took place a secret, and even in real gatherings, they took care never to speak loud. However, even in such cases, a ninja had techniques to steal top secrets from their foes.

 ABOUT SWORD SAINT... AND NINJUTSU                                                                   There is a word in Japanese, 'Kensei', meaning 'sword saint'. Sword saints are different from sword experts or sword masters. Sword masters were individuals such as Iizasa Choisai, Aisu Ikosai, Koizumi Isenokami, Tsukahara Bokuden, Yagyu Sekishusai, Miyamoto Musashi, and Ito Ittosai. Historical records are replet with tales of these underfeated sword masters; their sword skills were said to be divine and their fame still echos to the present day.               So who where the sword saints? They were people who did not only excel in the way of figthing with the sword but had also reached a position that transcended the sword masters. Sword saints were also far superior to those who practiced the way of the sword in the 'Dojo'. Such lesser swordsmen had forgotten the sense of being able to respond in a life and death situation, and lacked experience that was useful in real combat.  
Ninjutsu art of sword was based in the above philosophy. Actually most of the Ninjas have been born through this kind of swordsmen, such as Hattori Hanzo. The divine way of sword art is the START of all the famous Ninja warriors for the following generations. Although many of the famous Ninja in real life they were supervisors of Samurai swordmen like Daisuke Togakure while they were keeping in secret life the art of Ninja, acting as leaders group leaders of Ninja agents.  
NInjutsu art of sword was necessary to excel against the basic opponents who were the Samurai superior warriors.
The Ninjutsu art to succeed the own mission should invent superior technics in order to beat the Samurai art. From the moment that Ninja predominated in the history as fantom warriors and they succeed their missions, this fact can proves that the sword art of Ninja was superior.  There existing Ninja 'sword saint' warriors that never became famous for the simply reason that the were ''NINJA''....!

Bujinkan

Before the multitude of ninjutsu dojos that exist today were established, there was one major dojo named Bujinkan (武神館). The grand master of Bujinkan is Mr. Hatsumi, Masaaki (初見 良昭). He is 34th successor of Togakushi-Ryu ninjutsu. Since childhood, Mr. Hatsumi has mastered various ancient martial arts and he is the head of nine martial arts schools. Mr. Hatsumi has more than 100 thousand disciples in the world.
His skills are so practical that public policemen and professional soldiers learn them from him. For instance, people can participate in gunfights with the techniques of learned in Bujinkan. INCORRECT SPIRIT OF NINJUTSU CAN KILL YOU.                             Ninjutsu was not actually "Ninjutsu" right from the start. It started out as "Shinobi methods" (Shinobi no Ho), meaning methods for discerning what is right for the world, enduring,Ninja training to become a moral being, becoming aware of one's destiny, and dedicating one's life to other people or the world as a whole. These later became known as Ninpo and later still Ninjutsu. The original sense of Ninja was not one of mere Jutsu (techniques), but rather that of Ho (laws or principles) permeating the entire universe. For this reason, Ninja always fixed their perspective on Tenhijin, the relationship between the universe, the earth and humankind.                 In Ninjutsu Hiketsubun, a Kuden by Takamatsu Sensei, he talks quite clearly about the essence of Shinobi:"The sense of the martial arts and the ways of strategy lies in protecting oneself. Ninjutsu is central to this self-protection. Ninjutsu protects the spirit too. If you perform the martials arts with an incorrect spirit, instead of protecting your-self, you will end up killing yourself". P.S.>Budo is only for those whose heart is in the right place....!

Female Ninja Spies of Medieval Japan by Susan Spann

Most Westerners think of ninjas as black-masked men with swords who appear from the shadows and strike without warning.

But not all ninja assassins were male, and not all of them walked in shadow.

Female ninjas, known as kunoichi, formed an important part of medievalshinobi clans. Like their male counterparts, kunoichi trained in combat, disguise, and stealth, though their missions and function differed from those of male shinobi in several important ways.

Disguises and Tactics

Shinobi (which is the Japanese pronounciation of the characters Westerners read as “ninja”) worked as spies as well as assassins. All shinobi could kill in the line of duty, and many did, but others acted as covert agents—often deep undercover in enemy territory.

Medieval Japan was ruled and dominated by men of the samurai class. Samurai rarely trusted strangers, but often made exceptions for women, either because of their beauty or because the woman filled a “harmless” social role (a maid, for example). Kunoichi frequently posed as performers, courtesans, or servants. In these disguises, kunoichi infiltrated temples, castles, and fortresses, either to gather information or to strike at well-protected targets male assassins could not reach.

A male shinobi might assume the role of a samurai retainer or an artisan, but those positions seldom allowed the assassin unfettered access to his target. Samurai lived well-defended lives. Assassinations by male ninja often took the form of clandestine (usually nocturnal) missions, a medieval form of “seek and destroy.”

By contrast, a kunoichi could gain her target’s trust until he allowed her intimate access, at which point she could attack—when both his pants and his guard were down.

Shinobi training for both genders focused on utilizing the ninja’s personal strengths to best advantage. In medieval Japan, where women were often prized for beauty rather than skill, a kunoichi’sbeauty was one of her most valuable—and deadly—weapons.

But that doesn’t mean the female ninja depended exclusively on her looks. In combat, kunoichi were just as deadly, and as well-trained, as any othershinobi.

Special Weapons

Like their male counterparts, kunoichi trained with a variety of weapons. Most knew how to use a sword, though female ninjas usually specialized in close hand-to-hand combat—which meant a preference for daggers, garrotes, poisons, and specialty items like bladed fans and claw-like finger extensions known as neko-te.

Neko-te, in particular, were used almost exclusively by kunoichi. The weapon consists of leather finger sheaths topped with sharpened metal “claws.” The sheaths slipped over the end of the wearer’s fingers, giving the kunoichi a set of lethal, tiger-like claws that measured from one to three inches in length. Many women poisoned the metal claws for added effect.

Neko-te slipped on in an instant but disappeared just as quickly into a pocket or the sleeve of a kimono, facilitating surprise attacks and helping the kunoichi avoid discovery.

History of "Kunoichi" ninja

Female ninja are mentioned in Bansenshukai, a 17th century Japanese book compiling the knowledge of the clans in the Iga and Kōga regions devoted to the training of ninja. According to this document, the primary function of female ninja was simple espionage, finding legitimate service positions in the households of enemies, to accumulate knowledge by gaining trust or overhearing conversations.

One historically accepted example of this is Mochizuki Chiyome, the 16th century wife of a Samurai warlord, who was tasked by her uncle with recruiting women to create an underground network of female espionage agents.

Chiyome recruited several young women who were recently orphaned, prostitutes or victims of the civil wars of the Sengoku period. She also recruited girls who were either lost or abandoned. Many people believed that she was helping these women, and giving them an opportunity to start up a new life. But in reality, they were trained to become highly efficient information gatherers and verifiers, seductresses, messengers and when necessary, assassins. The girls were taught all the skills of a miko (Shinto shrine maiden or a wandering female shaman), which allowed them to travel virtually anywhere without suspicion, receiving religious education to complete their disguise. Over time, Chiyome's kunoichi learned to effectively use more disguises such as actresses, prostitutes or geisha. This allowed them to move freely within villages, towns, castles and temples, and get closer to their targets. Eventually, Chiyome and her kunoichi had set up an extensive network of some 200-300 agents that served the Takeda clan and Shingen was always informed of all activities, putting him one step ahead of his opponents at all times until his mysterious death in 1573.

Ξεκίνησε να ενδιαφέρεται για την πολεμική τέχνη του ninjutsu από το 1982, με αφορμή τον Masaaki Hatsumi που μόλις είχε γίνει γνωστός στη Δύση. Παρακολούθησε μαθήματα κάτω από τον Δημήτρη Παπανικολάου, μαθητή του Massaki Hatsumi, στην περιοχή της Γλυφάδας την περίοδο 86’ – 90’. Μετά το θάνατο του sensei Παπανικολάου, η Elise Elle μαζί με μία μικρή ομάδα μαθητών συνέχισε να εξασκείται με βάση τη διδασκαλία του. Το 2013, η Elise Elle παρακολούθησε επιτυχώς το kunoichi taikai σεμινάριο στο Τόκυο της Ιαπωνίας του Masaaki Hatsumi Soke. Το ενδιαφέρον της απέναντι στην τέχνη του ninja δεν σταματά, ενώ ταυτόχρονα εξειδικεύεται και τελειοποιείται στην γυναικεία τέχνη των ninja (kunoichi).

Elise Elle – CV for Ninja

Elise begun to show interest on the ninjutsu martial art in 1982, because of Masaaki Hatsumi, who had just become famous to the West. She attended martial arts lessons by Dimitris Papanikolaou, disciple of Masaaki Hatsumi, at Glyfada area for the period of 1986 – 1990. After sensei’s Pananikolaou death, Elise Elle continued to practice along with a small group of disciples, based on his teachings. In 2013, Elise attended successfully the kunoichi taikai seminar, held by Masaaki Hatsumi in Tokyo (Japan). Her interest on the art of ninja never stops, while she specializes and refines herself at the women’s art of ninja (kunoichi).

At the moment, Elise Elle holds the AMAZON studio (Kyprou Avenue 163-167, Argyroupoli) and teaches a small group of women, based on bujinkan ninjutsu, emphasizing on the specific secret practices of women ninja (kunoichi), without excluding men.
